A trip to Baia d´Abra (sout-east coast of the Madeira island)

This trip was different from the others. Baia d´Abra is a clearly visible proof of volcanic origin of Madeira island. There are no many trees or flowers, but beutiful scenery of send, rocks, stones, stiff magma, coves and black send beaches (at least one).

This trip is easily accessible by car (there is the parking in the beginning of the path and kiosk with ice cream and limonades) or by bus. From Funchal you can hit any bus in the airport direction which ends up at the bus stop Baia d´Abra. For example n. 113. You cannot miss this stop. Is the very last one. On your way to Baia d´Abra you will pass by cities Santa Cruz, Machico and Canical. It takes something about one hour.

At the final stop you can check the timetables. Buses in the opposite direction usually goes every hour.

The trek itself will take two hours walking. One hour to the the top, from where you can see a lighthouse Sao Lourenco on isolated island Ilhéu do Farol (or just Farol). This is very nice place for a picture, but not the only one. And one hour back. Depends on the amount of your stops to take photos.

There are many beautiful sceneries during the way. It is hard to subscribe them, so see the photos. 😉

On your way back you can hit another path, but just for a while. Most of the way you will go back by the same one.

On the very beginning of the way you can descend to a beautiful small beach with black vulcanic sand. I highly recommend you take a bath there! The water is warm and clean and I think that this is one of the most beutiful places in the island.

There is only one big disadvantage – the tourists. I know, I was one of them, but they are everywhere! Sometimes you need to go in a line. I could be worse, but anyway, better is to go in the morning! 😉

And one warning in the end…this path is not dangerous, but it is better not to go there when it is rainy or hard wind! Under the other criteria you will be extremely satisfied! 🙂
